March 6

“Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”

“Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

-Matthew 5:10-12

(Please read the scripture passage through three times using the practice of lectio divina.)

Reflection

Perhaps, on a personal level, we don’t have enough conflict in our lives. This may seem like a ridiculous claim amidst a political season in which vitriol, acrimony, and accusation are swirling around us like gale winds. But many of us avoid conflict with all our might. When difficult issues arise in conversation, we change the topic. When controversy fills our news feeds, we “unfriend” certain people and choose non-threatening relationships. When someone says something offensive, we soothe over it in the name of “peace.”

If we determine to stand up for righteousness and justice, we will pay a price. During Lent, we remember that Jesus paid with his life. As his followers, we will imitate his example of speaking against religious hypocrisy, speaking up for righteousness, and speaking about God’s concern for the poor. If we never face opposition, perhaps it’s not because we’re so peaceful and good, but because we are afraid.

Action (Engage)

Can you think of a relationship in which you’ve been avoiding controversy? Try to imagine a way to engage that person constructively. Imagine having a conversation where you both seek to understand each other. Perhaps you summarize what the other has said to the other person’s satisfaction. Or, consider inviting that person to read a book or article that represents “your side”? Then invite him or her to choose something for you to read. Arrange a time to have a conversation about what you’ve both learned.
